Guide to Shaw
Shaw offers a unique neighborhood in DC’s Northwest quadrant that has just recently started to come in to its own. From the commercial attractions and independent businesses offered on the U St. corridor to the historic appeal of the buildings here or the hustle and bustle offered by young Howard students, there’s truly something for everyone in Shaw.
Where is Shaw?
The Shaw neighborhood can be found just South of Adams Morgan and directly to the East of Dupont Circle. The neighborhood is bound by M Street NW to the South, Florida Avenue to the north, 11th Street to the west and New Jersey Avenue to the east.
History was made in Shaw
To truly know Shaw is to know its history, which is steeped in the arts. Shaw has been the center of Washington’s African-American nightlife for most of the 1900s and it is also the birthplace of jazz legend Duke Ellington. In the 20s the area was known as “Black Broadway” and hosted many important shows. The U St/Shaw area in the 20th century was only overshadowed by New York’s Harlem as the center of African American culture. Several buildings still stand monument to this era including the historically protected Howard Theatre and the many jazz clubs, including the Bohemian Caverns, that occupy the area.
Getting in to the Neighborhood
Shaw is directly serviced by the Shaw-Howard/U Street stop on the yellow/green lines of the Metrorail. There are also several main bus routes in the neighborhood as well the major routes being X3, 52,53, 54, S1, S2, S3 and the popular DC Circulator. Traffic here is a mixed bag—U St. should be avoided at all costs, because it is very congested, but other main roads, including North Capitol, offer relatively less traffic.
Restaurants and Bars
There are a few neighborhood spots that everyone in Shaw knows about, or should, as they offer a unique blend of fine dining, casual eats, craft cocktails and international beer. For those looking for a nice night out, Bistro Bethem, Thally and Rogue 24 all offer nicer spots to grab dinner. Rogue 24 is a special treat as it is a tasting-menu-only restaurant run by the award winning chef, R.J. Cooper. More casual fare can be found at a number of delicious Ethiopian restaurants in the area as well as Azi’s Café, which is a go-to coffee and sandwich shop.
The best bars in the area vary a bit. A&D Neighborhood Bar offers creative cocktails and small plates, while Dacha Beer Garden is constantly packed during the day and on weekends with locals looking to try the best German beers out of boot shaped glasses. Shaw’s Tavern is the neighborhoods mainstay and has evolved considerably over the past 5 years. It’s a great place to grab a beer with friends during the week or even hang out with a book on Sunday afternoons. Both Shaw’s Tavern and Dacha offer great patios, which is super convenient, because as everyone knows, Washingtonians love their outdoor dining.
Entertainment & Shopping
While Shaw’s side streets are a bit sleepy, main corridors and plazas offer a variety of shopping and entertainment options. The biggest source of entertainment can be offered by the legendary Howard Theatre, which attracts people from all over DC, Maryland and VA. The main events here are gospel brunches and hip hop concerts. The venue has been around for years and the original stage is still in tact reminding everyone of the golden age of performances from stars like Duke Ellington, Abbott, Costello and Chuck Brown.
In addition to late night entertainment there is also a variety of shopping in the area. Local picks range from chains such as Lulu Lemon to independent favorites like Dekka and Junction, which offer vintage and art inspired clothing. There are also a few favorite home goods stores in the area including Ruff & Ready Furnishings, a cross between an antique shop and a flea market, and Greater Goods, which focuses on eco-friendly merchandize.
Living in Shaw
The Shaw neighborhood is dominated by Victorian row houses that line the streets and give the neighborhood historic charm. There are also several luxury apartment options in the neighborhood, the most prominent being City market at O which is equipped with a massage room, rooftop dog park and infinity pool. Rentals are abundant in the area and can mostly be found in the form of apartments and condos.
Parks and Recreation in Shaw
One of the most charming aspects of Shaw is that its community centers and recreation options really offer a livable appeal to the neighborhood. Old City Farm & Guild is a garden center and Ninth and N offers a garden oasis for Shaw residents as well as hosting many community events including the Homegrown DC Fair, a regular farmers market and, in the future, an ice rink.
The two main parks in the neighborhood are located on the same block—the skate park and the dog park. The skate park is in the center of town and is known for having a very laid back and chill vibe. Just up the street a bit is the Dog Park that has graced the Shaw area for over five years now. The dog park is an example of how much Shaw residents care for the area as it is completely volunteer and donation driven. There is space for more than 30 dogs here and it has later hours than most parks so it is a great place to catch up with friends after work.
Development will continue in Shaw
Shaw is an area that has been around forever, but has just recently developed a firm, distinct identity compared to adjacent neighborhoods. As more and more people move to the area its identity will only become more defined. However one thing is for sure, Shaw will always have its heart and roots in historic DC.

One of my favorite lunch spots. It's in a former garage behind 1314 Ninth Street, NW. Sandwiches so big it's lunch AND dinner! Wander around Naylor Court and Blagden Alley afterwards to walk it off.
